What Are Apprenticeships?

An apprentice is anyone aged 16 or more who combines work with studying for a nationally-recognized work-based qualification. They can be new or current employees.

Traditionally, apprenticeships have always been associated with trades such as plumbing, carpentry, engineering and so on, but today apprenticeships can apply to just about any career, in business or anywhere else, and across both the public and private sectors.

Government funding is available to train both new and existing employees, and with the new Apprenticeship Program Guidelines, the number of apprentices is set to expand dramatically.

Apprenticeships have been designed by Sector Skills Councils representing businesses, the training will be relevant to your industry and your apprentice will develop the skills they need to support your business. There are over 250 types of apprenticeship across more than 1,400 job roles – we’ve given details of some of the key ones in our Apprenticeship Training section

Should I take on apprentices?

Most employers certainly think so. As a general rule, the investment you put into apprentices more than repays itself in terms of increased skills, loyalty and much else.

Our Apprenticeship Specialist will provide you with the advice and guidance you need to decide whether apprenticeship is the answer to your business needs. If they are, we will help you choose the framework that will give your apprentice the skills you want and suggest which providers are best placed to meet your educational training needs; so all you do is provide the on the job training(OJT).
